Spatial Heritage Review Issue #11, September 2024
This month: AR history trails, natural history in VR, amazing 3D print initiatives, historic gaming, + much, much more!
Hello spatial heritage enthusiasts!
As the saying goes “better late than never” 😅 While I tried to get this month’s edition out in a timely manner, life had other plans. Regardless, I think you’ll find simply *loads* of interesting projects from September ‘24 to explore—scroll on and take a look!
As for me, last month I:
Presented an online seminar on IIIF 3D to Analysis and Recording of Cultural Heritage in Venice (video recording).
Attended eCommemoration Convention 2024 in Hamburg.
Whipped along several consultation projects.
Took a much needed holiday. 🏖️
I hope your September was equally full of interesting and pleasant shenanigans.
Until next month,
Tom

Software, Hardware, & Technology
As Epic Games moves closer towards winding down Sketchfab, the heritage community has thoughts. For me, the discussion is as much about control and sustainable access as it is about the validity of Sketchfab/Fab as a home (and not the home) for 3D data and its heritage context.
👓 In other news, while Meta and Snapchat announced their respective hi-tech Orion and Spectacles ‘24 AR glasses, Zappar expands availability of their Google cardboard-esque smartphone-based Zapbox AR setup.
3D printing, CNC, & Physical Reproductions
A really astounding amount of activity in this category in September!
Several projects demonstrating 3D prints to increase participation and accessibility including projects by Spazio Geco for Museo Etrusco Guarnacci [featured image], and how about on-demand 3D printed souvenirs via Cade Museum’s ‘pay to print’ program?
